Before and after

I’ve always wanted a vegetable garden. I’ve tried being a cool urban gardener but it didn’t work. I killed any brave plants with too much water and compost. Vertical gardening also did not fill my vegetable gardening needs.
When I moved to the farm, the first thing we did was build a closed vegetable garden. It took a lot of hard work from Keiran and the guys but it’s finally done!
The ground here is very hard and rocky, so instead of planting directly into the soil, I built planters from old wood panelling. These planters where then filled with layers of the red sandy soil, cow manure and straw. By soaking the layered soil every second day, the straw and manure start to break down and create a great growing medium.

I have 5 boxes in total, with space around each to plant, prune, talk and tend to my plants. Three of the boxes have already been planted, with the last two boxes only being filled with soil this past weekend.
I’m already loosing sleep because I have so little space left to plant and so many seeds to sow!
I think we will need to add an extra wing to the garden next season.
